In 2021, there were 346,700 passenger cars insured with OEM flush-mounted rear-view mirrors in China, an increase of 73.04% over the previous year.

The market for electronic rearview mirrors is on a sharp rise, but it is still in its infancy.

In April 2016, the 2016 Cadillac XT5 equipped with a flush-mounted rear view mirror was launched on the market. It was the first time that an OEM streaming rearview mirror appeared in the Chinese passenger car market. Subsequently, car brands such as WEY, Buick and FAW (Hongqi and Bestune) also revealed models with flush-mounted rear-view mirrors. As of May 2022, 13 auto brands in China have marketed models with flush-mounted rear view mirrors and have achieved certain sales.

There are few streaming rear view mirror suppliers involved in the OEM market considering the current volume, creating a relatively simple complete scene. Our data shows that Yuanfeng Technology is now the largest supplier of rear-view streaming mirrors in the Chinese passenger car market, with an overwhelming market share of 72%.

For the implementation of solutions, the prevailing solutions change the Class I vision device from a traditional optical mirror to a display screen, so as to adapt to the maximum extent the driver’s habit of seeing the rear view. Some OEMs are also implementing a compromise, which is to separate the Class 1 vision device from the image, i.e. continue to use the traditional optical mirror to present the image collected by the broadcast camera on the group monitor or center console display. Examples include Changan UNI-K and ZEEKR 001.

3. Electronic exterior mirrors: Most automakers take a wait-and-see attitude.

Different from the flowing rear view mirrors, the outside rear view mirrors play a very important role in the safe daily driving of bumpy road to access electricity. Since the UN issued the UN-R6 regulation in June 2016, Europe, Japan, South Korea and India among other regions/countries have started selling models equipped with electronic exterior mirrors.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks debuts MirrorCam, a mass-produced electronic exterior mirror solution first applied to the Actros heavy-duty flagship truck. Mercedes-Benz adopts a conservative rearview mirror replacement strategy where only the main rear view mirror (Class II) and FOV wide rear view mirror (Class IV) are electronic, and the front view mirror and the outside close view mirror are retained. The Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam system consists of two cameras and two 15.2-inch screens. Above the MirrorCam display are three manually adjustable virtual distance lines (moving left, reverse and overtaking) to assist the driver in estimating the distance with the vehicle behind. At the same time, the MirrorCam display also integrates the warning information for the Mercedes-Benz Sideguard Assist service.

Passenger cars:

Lexus, the luxury brand, was the first to mass-produce the passenger car electronic exterior mirror (Digital Side View Monitors), and applied it to the ES300h.

The Lexus Digital Side View Monitors allow you to switch the viewing angles in real time in different driving conditions. For example, when the turn signal is engaged or reverse gear is engaged, the viewing angle is automatically enlarged from normal to wide angle.

4. There are challenges, but this trend is unstoppable.

Electronic rearview mirrors are still much better than conventional optical mirrors, but they face huge challenges such as high cost, low reliability and diversion of the driver’s eyes. In the long term, electronic rearview mirrors will serve as an integral part of the car’s intelligence, but it won’t become a huge trend in the short term.

Direction 1: Combination of CMS and ADAS / Autonomous Driving

The electronic rearview mirror camera is installed near the conventional outside rearview mirror or at the rear of the vehicle, two positions where the ADS camera is often located. Some CMS functions interfere with Blind Spot Monitoring / Blind Spot Detection / ADS Camera, both of which are intended to detect or detect road traffic conditions at the rear of the vehicle and provide driving decisions to the driver/vehicle. The two are expected to be combined considering product cost, function perception and air resistance.

Trend 2: CMS interior/exterior rearview mirror image fusion

The side/rear view view of the car currently follows traditional driving habits. The CMS screens are positioned left, center top, and right in the front of the cockpit, with physical viewing apertures. Technologically based on the traditional optical mirror retention, the images of the left rear and right rear taken by the electronic outside view mirror and the electronic internal mirror can be manufactured using algorithms, combined and displayed on a single screen.

Direction 3: Combination of CMS and Cockpit Domain Controller

With the improvement of chip computing power and the evolution of E/E architecture, cockpits integrate display solutions such as an LCD panel, HUD, center console display, assistive entertainment display, and rear entertainment display into the intelligent cockpit field controllers, in an effort to enable unified management in the same chip. The advent of electronic rearview mirrors results in more data flows that need to be processed for the vehicle, and separate ECUs will increase the cost of the entire vehicle. Low cost will be the main driving force for adoption of cockpit field controllers.
