Jefferson Parish Receives 2022 Environmental Leadership Program
Municipal Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention

Jefferson, Los Angeles The Jefferson County Department of Environmental Affairs received the 2022 Environmental Leadership Program Municipal Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ).

LDEQ has recognized the achievements of the Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs in educating local owners and operators of industrial and high-risk facilities on how to reduce rainwater pollution and comply with environmental regulations through the Environmental Stewardship Program. Through the program, the department has established criteria for identifying and a scoring process for selecting recipients of environmental stewardship awards. Awards are given to industries and companies at Jefferson Parish that demonstrate environmentally friendly rainwater practices and lead society by example.

“Jefferson Parish continues to launch rainwater awareness programs to educate the public and businesses about what they can do to prevent pollution and keep local waterways clean,” said Sami Khalil, Environmental Affairs Supervisor for the Rainwater Department, Sami Khalil. “We are proud of these award-winning programs, which use a variety of different outreach efforts to raise public awareness of the environmental consequences of specific activities that contribute to rainwater pollution.”

The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) was established in 1995 as a voluntary collaborative effort between environmental quality management in Louisiana and many industries in Louisiana to enhance the prevention of pollution and other efforts, in seeking to achieve environmental excellence and leadership. At the award ceremony, which took place on June 9, 2022 in Baton Rouge, ELP members were commended for their voluntary efforts in pollution prevention, community environmental awareness initiatives, environmental ordinances, and environmental enforcement and management systems that have gone beyond regulatory compliance to improve the environment.
