Kershaw County helping get books out in the community

Kershaw County Library has started its summer book session for children, teens, and adults.

Kershaw County, South Carolina – The Kershaw County Library promotes summer reading.

They do this by using their library on wheels, mobile bookshelves, to help get books to those in apartments, communities, churches and parks of areas they call “book deserts.”

The book desert is there, says Amy Schofield of Kershaw County Library, “Where there is a dearth of printed material for books, of course being librarians we are beyond reading, having books available in these places in these book deserts is very important.”

Schofield says the bookstore is student-focused.

“We try to put books in the hands of children who might not have books at home,” she says, adding that books are not only for children and teens, but for adults as well.

“Going to the library creates an extra step an extra barrier, you have to have transportation and then you don’t have to worry about them being taken back, they keep them too, there are no fines, there are no replacement fees, so we are trying to make it free of charge,” said Scofield. obstacles as possible.
